NM 2019Last week marked the 6th anniversary of the death of a man who tried to make our world a more equal and fair place, Nelson Mandela.

The following quote has often been attributed to him, and while Im not sure that he wrote it, at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter whether he said it first, paraphrased it or just borrowed it because the point is it sums up perfectly the dignity that Nelson Mandela saw in every human life.

He said:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There's nothing to be gained from shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make real the glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

Barack Obama once remembered a time when somebody called Mandela a saint – to which he replied ‘ Im not a saint, unless a saint is a sinner who keeps on trying’. And from that we could probably all learn something. None of us is perfect, none of us is flawless, but we have to keep trying to be the best that we can be.

With that in mind, Lord, today we pray for a good day.

Amen.
